SoF2 Multiplayer Maps by D-Day

Way back in 2007, when Ski was 15 years old, he began creating custom multiplayer maps for Soldier of Fortune II. He still plays the game every so often and is still known in game as D-Day. Here’s the showcase of all of the maps he created over the years provided in old skool HTML tables to remind you of the good ole’ days. You can still download them and add them to your game’s base folder.

I started work on this map in January 2022 and knew at the time what all of the major junction points in the map would be and where they would be located. It was going to take some time to fully piece together. In August 2023 I received notice that xLogi was coming to visit so I developed the map further to where it was playable. Upon tbfreely’s passing I decided that I really wanted to finish this map and dedicate it to him. I received guidance from DeathLord (DL) over at MDK on how to incorporate green team as an optional third team. He also provided a fix for a player spawn count limit that can be overwritten with a patch for MDK Mod. I still reduced the player spawn count to 33 players for each team (22 for green), and greatly reduced the deathmatch spawn points to around 64.

Also known as Heat at the Reptile Zoo. Imagine if you will an owner of a entertainment center that’s losing business and needs to invite alternative customers and ideas into the business. He wants to maintain traditional business during the day, but thinks of what he could do with the night time hours. What he gets is a slammed to the wall full occupancy of free spirited hippie forest people and assholes concerned about who’s going to step on their Jordans. It’s a cultural clash, and on one particular night things get way out of hand and the owner needs special forces to restore order on his property.

This map set the second benchmark for improved quality maps in my collection. This is a large shop map built slightly above the standard for the stock maps that came with the game. I reworked a lot of the stock textures including lighting textures to look like LEDs and other improvements. Also for the very first time, shaders are provided for custom textures. Demolition is included for the first time in a long while as a gametype.

Notice the capital I. Pronounced: Pen Island. Named for the WiFi SSID at the house I lived at for a short while and never released to the public. The house was torn down in 2022 to serve as a plot of land for commercial expansion in the area, but you can now always visit in SoF2. The map was made specifically for the friends who lived here together. It’s a good warmup map.

The tale of a cat that lays on the sidewalk blocking access to old people who need the sidewalk, a deputy sheriff who’s just cool with everything, a guy that needs a wheel chair who lives on the 2nd floor and always seeks help from strangers to get down for work each day, and a bunch of crazy people obsessed with automotives, Pokemon, and watching King of the Hill.

I was approached by Hues (Baki), he went by several names. He was big into the Zeitgeist Movement and wanted to have a couple of maps made to fit the idea. He wanted a map with money all over the ground so I replicated a block of my hometown’s downtown area for the first of three maps. This is the biggest map of the three and the only one that supports the infiltration game type. All three maps are contained in one .pk3 file.

zeitgeist_labs

About half way through working on this map, I received notice that my High School was looking for IT students to compete in the county technology fair. I entered this map under the game design competition even though I did not design and release SoF2. I and my teacher still felt that the map qualified. Of course I had to replace the texture of Jared holding a donut bag and giving the finger as well as maybe a few other things just for the comptetion. My judge was appauled to see me playing a shooting game in a high school computer lab during my demonstration and may not have given me much credit for the work as it related to the category. I did explain that this was just a level and the mechanics were from the game itself. She took a great deal of time looking through my binder of specifications I had prepared for her and often looked at the other judges in disbelief. I may have recieved a better score had I entered the graphics design competition, but I think I knew her from some bad place in my past. The map resembles a shop map, but it’s more like a health clinic.

Here’s a fun one that I’ve never released to the public before. In my senior year of high school, my whole Advanced Java class including the teacher decided that the curriculum was too far above what we were capable of. Android phones became popular later that year, but favorably the curriculum was changed to more of an advanced IT projects class. Not long after, I approached the teacher and asked her if I were to make a SoF2 map of this classroom, could we play it on the school computers? She paused for about four seconds and then said yes. I went home on a Wednesday and had the map compiled and ready to distribute with the game that Friday. The whole class played the map of the classroom while sitting in that same classroom. The JAVA SUCKS written on the whiteboard was replicated. The map also has both “lab” rooms, the classroom next door along with a small piece of the hallway and a fictional crawl space above the ceiling.

I decided to make a third map to go alongside Forest and Science. Like the two, named after System of a Down songs, it features a soundtrack file that was not released by System of a Down. This map is just a well lit and easier to navigate version of Forest with an interstate running through the middle, but also with an accessible maze of drainage pipe. Unlike the other two maps, capture the flag is a supported game type. I still can’t design trees.

And another shop map. It’s the last of the four maps completed and released on the same day. I decided to continue with the tradition of a shop map named after the year it was released. Once more it goes along with the standards set for maps that were released for the game, but with a few twists. A shop map wouldn’t be a shop map without the infiltration game type so that was included.

Prior to mp_aquashop, I made a bad quality map of my high school. tbfreely and xLogi were the only two people who ever play tested it with me. It was eventually lost and never released. This is a better quality high school map, and unlike before, it wasn’t designed based off of memory. It features an office, cafeteria, gymnasium, bathrooms, and classrooms. Overdose

I joined [Heretic] clan around the beginning of March 2008 and enjoyed many days and nights of SoF2. Iceman and I shared the same birthday so I decided to make something for the occasion. The concept was to have a party area on the map with no killing as well as small area exclusive to the usual. The party area has waterslides, a bar (still a teenager), living quarters with hot tubs. The original name was birthday_map and was never really meant for public release. Additional game types were not added. The map was meant to be a reflection on what was good in our lives at the time. There’s good stuff in here. And then some bad shit happened and I didn’t want to do anything at all for a couple of months. Things change and you improve. I eventually decided to release the map publicly later in June. The idea in the name is that there was just too much that was good while the map was being created. Enjoy the party!

This was probably the first “professional” map. It was in line with the stock maps that came with the game, but it was small. As a shop map, it didn’t have all of the features. Shop maps usually have roof access with a helipad and if not are usually rectangular on a single level. This is a squared two story building. It was still the best quality map I had produced to date and set a good benchmark. Lighting is good and everything is textured appropriately.

Forest

Run Forest run! This map was released on the same day as Science. This is supposed to be a scary place, and you can say it was even scarier back in the day when people actually played. Maybe also scary now that nobody plays. I wanted a dark map with as little lighting as possible, and you can go to a place just like that by going inawoods. It supports the same three game types that Science supports with the addition of infiltration. I can’t make trees in this game. Two of the “trees” (poles) in the map are climbable. Good luck finding them. The map has since been updated to reduce the size of the audio file.

This is Science! It was released alongside Forest on the same day. I didn’t recall any sort of power generating map that had been created at the time and I figured it would be fun. There’s a maze of power lines to scale, a open nuclear waste pit because you know, when I was a teenager I thought that it was an actual component. There’s also two cooling ponds for you to enjoy. October

The original plan was to create an outdoor map called October, filled with a haunted forest, leaves blowing around on the ground, and maybe a few campfires. I couldn’t figure out how to do most of that. And then I started digging around the decompiled stock maps for the game. The outdoor dark map idea eventually became Forest. Here, I decided to rebuild and work the demo version of mp_shop. I was still really bad at texturing. So this is a rockin’ Halloween fun time at your favorite shop map. There’s all kinds of scary here. The map features a redesigned and expanded kitchen with a sunlight, but you know it’s dark outside. There’s also a hidden room containing pickup goodies, most of the high end rifles and explosive launchers. The file has been repackaged to include a reduced audio file.

mp_aquashop screenshot 5 mp_aquashop screenshot 6 mp_aquashop screenshot 7 mp_aquashop screenshot 8
This was the first map I released to the public. Aside from the neat concept of a shop map under water, you’ll see problems. I didn’t know how to apply a texture to each individual side of a brush. As a result, you’re gonna see light fixtures on all six sides of a brush, vending machines that have the intended front/buttons on all 6 sides, and escalators with handrails of more horizontal handrails. There was an issue with the audio file, but it can’t be fixed across the game unless the map is recompiled. This would take a week to rebuild so the music for the map has been removed. However, DeathLord (DL) over at MDK patched the map to allow for the track to play in MDK modded servers.
